Most amateur golfers hit a gap wedge between 80 and 110 yards, with the average golfer landing closer to 100–105 yards. Your distance is shaped by three things: loft, swing speed, and strike quality.

Loft and distance. A pitching wedge has less loft, around 44° to 48°, so it flies farther and lower. A gap wedge has more loft, around 48° to 52°, so it flies shorter and higher, covering the yardage just beyond your pitching wedge.

Loft and distance, in the other direction. A gap wedge has less loft, around 48° to 52°, so it flies farther and lower. A sand wedge has more loft, around 54° to 56°, so it flies shorter and higher with more height around the green.

There's no difference. They're the same club with two different names. The terms are used interchangeably, though manufacturers may label the club as a gap wedge, approach wedge, AW, or A wedge.

Yes. A gap wedge works well for chip-and-run shots, where its lower loft keeps the ball flight down and gets it rolling toward the hole like a putt, making distance easier to control on the green.
